Together Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like conventional body horror, but within Together lies a profound examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot commences when the couple transition from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar narrative setup, sure, but that’s largely where the tropes cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a strange force starts to affect the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that arise in any relationship a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience today.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
