The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
