The US Justice Department have officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to block the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible further challenges.
