Around fifty cars have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Cars, walls and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.
Police report they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored substance.
The substance had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.
Police then found many other vandalized automobiles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say early analysis show the substance was probably blood from a person.
"There is still no clue as to its origin; authorities are presently not aware of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they added.
City officials said they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for information.
An important representative stated the vandalism rendered him without words and required to be addressed rapidly.
"This incident affects the core of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist attack in 2020," he posted on a platform, recalling the murder of nine victims by a shooter targeting individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
